Reception
At release
- The Guardian's Paul Lester called "챔피언" a "thrashy disco" that heavily samples Axel F by Harold Faltermeyer
- Billboard's Jeff Benjamin described the title track as a funky dance track using video game-like synthesizers years before the EDM explosion
- Benjamin wrote that the song doubled as an anthem for South Korea when it hosted the World Cup in Seoul that year
- The timely release, during Seoul's enthusiasm over the 2002 FIFA World Cup, confirmed Psy's place in the Korean music world and on the K-pop scene
- The title track was received well by Korean soccer fans
- Expat English teachers objected to the repeated use of a Korean word in the lyrics, which they heard as a slur
- After clarification, many people thought the word was an appropriate jab at convention, since Psy had studied in America and spoke English
