Reception
At release
- Metacritic score of 75, indicating generally favorable reviews
- Rolling Stone's Anthony Decurtis called it a relatively stripped-down affair, with Crow's emotional commitment holding the fourteen songs together
- AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine called it her liveliest, weirdest album since 1996's Sheryl Crow
- Erlewine wrote that the emotional directness on Detours makes it a progression, not a retreat
- Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani wrote that many of the songs rank among Crow's best
- Cinquemani noted a grittiness in the music and a scratchy, lived-in quality to Crow's vocals missing from her last couple of albums
