Reception
At release
- Rolling Stone's David Fricke wrote that the band-produced album was not quite the monster blowout Back in Black had been
- Fricke also said the Young brothers' retooling of old riffs for new hits sometimes teetered on self-plagiarism
- Cash Box said the title track blasts off with a basic hard rock guitar riff from Angus Young and Brian Johnson's equally basic hard rock squeals
Reappraisal
- Canadian journalist Martin Popoff called the album the blinding furious peak of the Brian Johnson era
- Popoff wrote that AC/DC recaptured the raw edge lost during the Mutt Lange years, even though the songs were starting to relive past glories
- AllMusic's Steve Huey agreed, writing that the band seemed to be running out of ideas at an alarming rate
- Huey noted that the record sales began to reflect this
- Malcolm Young later said the album was thrown together real quick and that he would not call it a great album
Records
- Reached No. 4 in the UK and No. 15 in the US
- Certified platinum by the RIAA
- The album was deemed a commercial disappointment compared with the band's previous two releases

- On tour in support of the album, Guns for Hire opened the set
- Frustrated by mixed reviews and dwindling audiences in some cities, Malcolm Young fired tour manager Ian Jeffrey
- Band-produced sessions were recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas
