Artist
Formation
- Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986.
- Original lineup: Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals), David Lovering (drums).
- Named after a word Santiago picked randomly from a dictionary.
Members
- Francis is the primary songwriter; his surreal lyrics cover extraterrestrials, incest and biblical violence.
- Deal left in 2012; Kim Shattuck and then Paz Lenchantin followed; Lenchantin became a full member in 2016.
- In 2024 Lenchantin was replaced by Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls.
Career
- Debut mini-LP Come On Pilgrim (1987), followed by Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991).
- Disbanded in 1993 after modest US success, but gained more popularity in the UK and Europe.
- Reunited in 2004 with sold-out world tours; released The Night the Zombies Came in 2024.
- Known for extreme loud-quiet-loud dynamics blending surf rock and punk rock; influenced Nirvana, Radiohead, Weezer and others.

Reception
At release
- Metacritic: average score 62 from 32 reviews, indicating generally favorable reviews
- Many critics called it more predictable than the band's earlier work
- Many critics described it as a solo album by singer Black Francis, since Kim Deal was absent
- Record Collector (Jamie Atkins): felt it had a "lack of personality", most noticeable without Deal
- Fact: comfortingly familiar, consistent and enjoyable, but totally uninspired; plays like a Black Francis solo effort with better session players
- The Line of Best Fit (Chris Todd): all components present, but Black Francis' songwriting no longer compelling
- NME (Phil Hebblethwaite): positive review; "Bagboy" and the title track sound free, adventurous and explosive
- Paste (Stephen M. Deusner): dismissive, arguing the album is worse than simply bad because it could have been much better
- The Telegraph (Helen Brown): the result is not bad; gritty melodies in the slicker vein of Trompe le Monde
Records
- US Billboard 200 peak: number 23, the band's most successful album on that chart
- 2016: gold certification from the Independent Music Companies Association, indicating at least 75,000 copies sold across Europe
- United States: sales exceeded 34,000 copies as of 2015, according to Nielsen SoundScan
- Record Store Day 2014 limited vinyl run with a single-sided 7" single of "Women of War"
