At release
- Rolling Stone's Elias Leight wrote that the album's power is somewhat diminished because a third of its songs were already out
- The same review called the remaining tracks impressively varied, from piano balladry to throwback hip-hop and guitar balladry
- Leight said the mix of styles makes the album feel center-less, and framed that as the point
- Critics gave the album generally positive reviews; it was initially a moderate commercial success
