Reception
At release
- Rolling Stone's Daina Darzin said the album dives into the emotionally deep end of drug addiction and loss
- Entertainment Weekly's David Browne wrote that the album wails and flails like a mosh-pit workout tape, but has moments of subtlety and maturity
- Browne criticized the band's attempts at cosmic philosophy and some songs' tired frat-funk
- Q's Peter Kane wrote that the Peppers work their own little patch with considerable expertise
- Q included the album in its best-of-the-year roundup
- The album received mixed to positive reviews, but was not as universally well received as Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Reappraisal
- AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine said following up Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a difficult task
- Erlewine felt Navarro's metallic guitar shredding made the band's funk gradually fade from the blend
- Erlewine saw My Friends as an attempt to hold the mainstream audience gained by Under the Bridge
- Robert Christgau gave the album a rating of dud
Records
- Sold more than two million copies and was certified multi-platinum
- Peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200
- Reached number two on the UK chart, the band's highest-charting album there at that time, kept from the top by Blur's The Great Escape
- Certified Gold on November 11, 1995
- Later certified Double Platinum in the United States
- My Friends peaked at number one on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts and number 29 on the UK Singles Chart
- Aeroplane peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart

- Black Fish Ferris Wheel was almost the album title
- Other working titles included The Sensitives, Turtlehead and The Blight Album
- Bob, a song about close friend Bob Forrest, surfaced 11 years later as an iTunes bonus track in 2006
- The US leg of the tour was postponed to early February because Chad Smith broke his wrist
