Reception
At release
- Metacritic average score 56 out of 100, based on 20 reviews from mainstream critics
- AllMusic's Fred Thomas: the album falls between the growing pains of an artist forced to develop faster than he is ready for and material less inspired than the earlier records
- The Guardian's Alex Macpherson: the best moments come from guests, and Khalifa is described as serviceable but limited
- The A.V. Club's Evan Rytlewski: the album splits the difference between a drug-centered muse and pop obligations without finding a middle ground
- Slant Magazine's Ted Scheinman: the main flaws have more to do with the lyrics' reflexive materialism than with Khalifa's ego
- Pitchfork's Jordan Sargent: the rapping is inconsequential to the production
- Spin's Dan Weiss: Khalifa does not say anything worth echoing
- Entertainment Weekly's Kyle Anderson: a positive review praising Khalifa's bleary-eyed charisma
- Rolling Stone's Jody Rosen: a positive review calling the album as solid as the earlier Rolling Papers was slack
- The Village Voice's Sowmya Krishnamurthy: the production really works, and the album is pleasant if not particularly inspired
- PopMatters' David Amidon: as pop rap albums go, the album is beyond solid
