Reception
At release
- Revolver said the album was noisy and angry
- Revolver said it was a far cry from the hooky choruses and doom-out goth of the band's 1993 breakout, Bloody Kisses
- Revolver said it had more in common with the New York hardcore sound of Peter Steele's previous band, Carnivore
- The lyrics were intended to be sarcastic
- Several songs drew accusations of misogyny, bigotry and Nazism
- The accusations were partly due to the word Untermensch, which the Nazis used as a blanket term for non-Aryans
- The lyrics did not translate well to non-English speaking countries, where sarcastic lines were translated and taken literally
Reappraisal
- Spanish Wikipedia calls the album the seed of what came later for the band
- Spanish Wikipedia says it mixes doom metal in the style of Black Sabbath with punk, gothic metal, thrash metal and even industrial metal
