Album story
Overview
- Trial by Fire is the tenth studio album by the American rock band Journey
- Released October 22, 1996; marked the reunion of the classic 1981–1985 lineup
- That lineup had not recorded together since 1983's Frontiers
- First album since Frontiers to feature bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith
- Last studio album with Steve Smith and vocalist Steve Perry
- Produced by Kevin Shirley, who continues to produce the band's albums
- Could loosely be termed a concept album; many tracks show overt spirituality in their lyrical content
Background
- First Journey studio album in ten years, following Raised on Radio (1986) and the band's split
- Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain formed the supergroup Bad English, which released albums in 1989 and 1991
- Steve Perry released his second solo album, For the Love of Strange Medicine, in 1994
- During a 1994 solo tour, Perry realized he missed being Journey's singer more than he had expected
- A&R executive John Kalodner of Columbia Records suggested the band reform
- Cain, Perry and Schon began writing together, aiming to see whether they still had the spark to write again
- The band did not try to reinvent itself on the album, and Perry said it would succeed or fail by being what it was
- Gregg Rolie, who had left in 1980, said he was invited and then quickly uninvited
Recording
- Credited to Kevin Shirley as producer, recording engineer and mixer (Discogs)
- John Hurlbut and Kevin Scott credited as second engineers (Discogs)
- Jonathan Cain credited with additional acoustic guitar and recording
- Recorded in several California studios, including Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood
- The Site and Wildhorse Studios, both in Marin County, also used
- Skywalker Ranch listed as a recording location (Discogs)
- Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound (Discogs)

- The name Journey was suggested by roadie John Villanueva.

Reception
At release
- Record Collector critic Tim Jones described the members as showing prime adult-oriented rock ballad form, with several uptempo tracks
- Jones said the overall energy did not reach the heights of the early 1980s output
- Jones singled out Message of Love as an exceptional track with superb vocals, harmonies and guitar work
- Jones praised One More for its refined guitar playing and sharp lead vocals
- Jones said the tender moments were balanced by the Bryan Adams-style rock track Can't Tame the Lion, which highlighted Neal Schon
- Jones concluded the release was a soothing representation of the group in a relaxed, comfortable mode
Records
- Entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3 on November 9, 1996
- Certified platinum in the United States by the RIAA
- The band did not receive another platinum award until Revelation in 2008
- When You Love a Woman was a Top 20 hit and Grammy nominated
- When You Love a Woman reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart

Trivia
- Trial by Fire is the only Journey album not followed by a supporting tour, because of internal disputes over a tour originally scheduled for summer and fall 1997
- The tour dispute followed Perry's hip injury, as he was unsure about getting the necessary surgery
- The band gave Perry the choice of surgery or replacement, and his departure followed
- Drummer Steve Smith also quit, saying the band without Perry did not interest him; he returned in 2015 and was dismissed again in 2020
- The title track is taken directly from Paul's Second Epistle to the Corinthians
- The album has been loosely described as a concept album, with many tracks reflecting faith, redemption and personal growth
