Album story
Overview
- We Are Not Your Kind is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot
- Released August 9, 2019, by Roadrunner Records
- The only Slipknot album recorded as an eight-member band
- Title taken from a lyric in the song "All Out Life"
- "All Out Life" was released as a standalone single in 2018 and appears as a bonus track on the Japanese edition only
Background
- Writing began in February 2017, when Jim Root and Shawn "Clown" Crahan started writing new material together
- The plan was at first a double album, which would be the band's first
- Crahan said the band wrote and recorded 22 songs and 26 interludes in total
- Corey Taylor spent 2017 recording and touring with his other band Stone Sour, so much of the early writing happened without him
- Percussionist Chris Fehn was fired in March 2019 after suing the group over unpaid royalties
- Taylor said the lyrics drew on a hard period in his life, including his separation from then-wife Stephanie Luby in 2016
Recording
- Recording began in November 2018, shortly after the release of the standalone single "All Out Life"
- The full band joined in January 2019
- Recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California, with co-producer Greg Fidelman
- Recording was completed by April 2019
- A rumor that Ross Robinson would produce the album was dismissed by guitarist Jim Root
- Root said the band spent most of its time on demos and found the final tracking process "a big challenge"
